Junior Golf

Otaki Junior Pennants team win the Wellington Competition: Our Otaki Golf Club 9-hole Junior Pennants team has won their interclub competition for 2018/19. On Sunday they defeated Boulcott Farm by 85 points to 79 in the final, held at Royal Wellington. Despite having to default the first round of the competition, the team was unbeaten in the following four round-robin games, and they then defeated Miramar in the semi-finals and now Boulcott Farm in the finals. Congratulations to Ned Butler, Isaac Fulford, Tedd Gibbs and Zach Heenan and Keegan Ryan for their successful season. Many thanks also to Chris Heenan for his management of the team.

The Otaki Golf Club is very proactive in encouraging young boys and girls to ‘give golf a go’ in the hope that they will want to continue developing their skills in this ‘game for life’. The programmes outlined below are designed for the juniors to have fun whilst developing these skills, learning course etiquette and making new friends in a safe outdoor environment.

During 2019, the following coaching course operates for young golfers.

Tiki Golf:

This programme operates during Terms 1 and 4 of the school year. It is aimed at primary and secondary school students aged from 6 years and up. Each week, participants are taught, by a professional coach,  a range of skills and are then given the opportunity to practise those skills in a controlled, safe environment. A team of adult volunteers from the Otaki Golf Club assist the coach and accompany the youngsters in small groups.

Cost: $20 per term                          Professional coach:  Kevin Smith

Venue: Otaki Golf Club                   Day and time: Mondays, 4.30 – 6.00pm

Junior Pennants:

In 2019, the Otaki Junior (9 hole) pennants team is participating in the Wellington regional competition. The junior pennants competition is an excellent introduction to competitive golf for aspiring young golfers. Participants are required to have an official handicap (purple tees) and the competition takes place on Sundays at golf courses around the Wellington district. It thus offers them the opportunity to play on a variety of courses around the region.

In 2018, the Otaki Golf Club was adjudged runner-up in the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards – Sports and Leisure division. This was in recognition of the work of our volunteer coaches and the success of our coaching programmes. Over 60 young people were involved in our junior golf programmes throughout 2017/18.
